Fantasy has become one of the most popular genres these days, where everything imaginable can be honed into a story. Terron James has done just that in his debut young adult novel, Insight, Book 1 of the four-part Beholder Series.
Terron has created the mystical land of Appernysia, a world brimming with rich history and magic that sticks in the imagination.
And to top that off, he is offering a $25.00 Amazon giftcard to a luck winner, so please check out how to play below.
Rumors are surging through Appernysia that a Beholder has been born,
the first wielder of True Sight in over a millennium.
Seventeen-year-old Lon Marcs discovers he has been blessed—or
cursed—with this gift. He cannot control the power of True Sight and
feels it killing him with each passing day. He realizes that the only
people who might possess the knowledge to save his life are the sworn
enemies of his king. To obtain their help, Lon would have to journey into
exile, leaving behind his village, family, and beloved Kaylen.
Although this is the hardest decision Lon has ever made, it is only
the first of many that will test his strength and challenge his
interpretation of right and wrong.
And now, Welcome Terron James!!
AMM: I’ll start with the question most people will want to know. Where on Earth did the idea for Insight come from?
TJ: I just answered this exact same question for another post going up today, so I'm going to copy the exact same answer.
It all started with the invention of True Sight, the magic system in my novel series. I was trying to think of something unique, but nothing really jived. I took my ideas to my dad, since he's excellent at brainstorming. The dude made fun of me, with laughing and everything. *sniff* But, it was the best make-fun-of-Terron session I've ever experienced, because in his jesting, the concept of True Sight emerged. Unfortunately, that was five years ago and I can't remember the specific details of the conversation, but I do remember saying something along the lines of, "Now, hold on a sec. I think you got something there, Dad!" This, of course was followed by more teasing, but I took that concept home to chew on. A week later, I brought my refined ideas back to my dad. His jaw hit the floor. That's when I knew I was on to something good.
AMM: I imagine all that teasing must have toughened you up some. :) Seriously though, did it take you a long time to invent Appernysia? Was it more of an internal process or did you spend hours, days, months, writing down details about this amazing world?
TJ: Months! In fact, I spent about 4 months developing the world before I even started writing the story. It made the writing go a lot more smoothly that way, though. I never had to question where someone was, what the terrain was like, or what they might encounter on a journey through any specific part of Appernysia. I have folders full of schematics, concept drawings, etc., of my world, most of which are drawn quite terribly on lined paper. I've included a scan of my original drawing, which you can compare to the final product. As you'll notice, some names and places have changed or been removed.
AMM: Very cool. And now you’ve given me an idea on how to proceed with my next novel. Thanks Terron!! I’ll show a peek of the maps you’re referring to here.
This first map shows Terron's original concept for the geography of Appernysia.
This second one is the final version that will appear in his book.
AMM: Terron, would you say that your protagonist, Lon, bears any resemblance to you?
TJ: Well, he is attractive. *snort* Honestly, no, but I also realize a part of me slips into all of my characters. If I had to pick a character that I most want to be like, I'd pick Tarek. He feels no obligation to follow social protocol. I wish I was as carefree.
AMM: I’m with you there. I think most people take life waaaaay too seriously. Hmm, do you at some deep, subliminal level, wish to have the powers of a ‘Beholder’?
TJ: No. I want to be a Beholder on a deep, cognizant level! That's one of the reasons I enjoyed writing this book so much! As an author, not only do I get to experience the power of a Beholder, but I also get to manipulate what they do with that power!
AMM: So you’re a power control sort of guy! That figures. What do you do to get your inspirational juices running?
TJ: Music! Lots and lots of music! But it must be wordless, and preferably some sort of movie or video game soundtrack. Thanks to music's inspiration, I've never experienced writer's block. *crosses fingers*
AMM: Is there anything about ‘Insight’ you would like readers to know?
TJ: It's the first of four books in the BEHOLDERS series. Besides that, I'll leave the opinions and reviews to you. People will care a lot more about what you say than what I say! :)
AMM: Finally, what are a couple of fun facts about yourself?
TJ: Hrm... fun facts... Oh, I got some! Well, they're more embarrassing than fun, but embarrassing can be fun, right?
I can do the wave with my eyebrows. I'm allergic to grass. I wet the bed until 7th grade. I have to twist the shower curtain rings perfectly straight every time before I shower. I made out with my cousin's wife (before they started dating, of course; makes for interesting family reunions). It took me 10 years of college to earn my English BA. *shudder* Lastly, my garage walls are covered in maps from The Lord of the Rings.
AMM: Thanks for stopping by, Terron!
